Frequently Asked Questions

What is WebNotes?

WebNotes is an online productivity and collaboration tool spun out of MIT that is the first of its kind to combine the power of online annotation, organization and sharing tools into a single, easy to use offering. WebNotes is an essential tool for anyone conducting online research in order to gather market data, construct reports, or collaborate with colleagues.

Where does WebNotes save my annotations?

WebNotes does not save your annotations to your hard drive like traditional annotation programs. Instead, it saves your notes on a remote secure server so that you can access them at any time from any computer with internet access.

How secure is WebNotes?

WebNotes encrypts all information that is sent to our servers and employs industry best practices to store your data safely and securely.

How reliable is WebNotes?

WebNotes is hosted on Rackspace servers which have been guaranteed to be up and running 99.99% of the time. Our servers are backed up daily to prevent data loss and minimize the difficulty in data recovery.

Does WebNotes work with tabbed browsing?

Yes! For all compatible browsers, WebNotes will work in a tabbed environment.

What browsers and operating systems is WebNotes compatible with?

WebNotes currently works on Windows, Linux, and Mac for Internet Explorer 6+, Firefox 2.0+, Chrome, or Safari. We also work on various Firefox and Chrome derivatives.

What information does WebNotes track?

Please view our privacy policy for a more detailed answer. In short, WebNotes makes an attempt to minimize any personally identifiable information that our servers would collect. That said, we do collect aggregate statistics in order to provide a better user experience.

My toolbar is grayed out. What's wrong?

There are a few possibilities. First make sure that you are signed in and the toolbar is "enabled". If both are true, try refreshing the web page. In some instances, users who have either disabled 3rd party cookies or deleted the WebNotes cookie will experience this issue. Make sure that 3rd party cookies are enabled and re-login to your WebNotes toolbar. In some instances, 3rd party add-ons such as FlashBlock or NoScript will prevent WebNotes from working properly.

When I try to create a sticky note, there is a status indicator saying "loading sticky note" but nothing appears. What happened?

Our sticky notes require Flash to work. Make sure your version of Flash is up to date. Also try checking to see if you have an add-on such as FlashBlock, which could interfere with sticky notes.

Does WebNotes work with PDF documents?

WebNotes Pro has been designed specifically to allow you to annotate PDF documents. For upgrade instructions, please visit our WebNotes Pro page.

Why don't sticky notes accept certain foreign characters?

This is actually a known bug with Flash. We have filed a bug report with Adobe and are waiting to hear back from them.

Who do I contact for support?

Please email support@webnotes.net. For WebNotes Pro and WebNotes Platinum customers, we will respond to your inquiries within 24 hours. Alternatively, feel free to submit a bug report or chat with us online via our support page.

Why doesn't WebNotes recognize a PDF when I click on a PDF link?
